Pansy Stockton began making mixed media assemblages such as this around 1919 while living in Denver, Colorado. She referred to them as "Sun Paintings" because she left all of the botanical elements out in the sun for long periods of time to ensure that no further fading would occur once incorporated into her works of art. She traveled far distances to collect the organic materials including British Columbia, California, Washington, the Eastern seaboard, the American Southwest and Hawaii. She often listed the plant varieties along with the area collected on the back of her paintings.
